Kelly Civil Construction was engaged by Barwon Asset Management to deliver specialist concrete works for the construction of two occupational road crossings in Barwon Downs. The crossings were designed to provide reliable long-term access across water supply channels while supporting the operational requirements of the surrounding road network.
Given the structures were constructed beneath existing roadways, durability and longevity were key project considerations. The crossings comprised precast culvert systems founded on reinforced concrete base slabs cast directly within the channel floors, creating robust infrastructure capable of withstanding long-term service conditions with minimal maintenance requirements.
Working closely with the civil contractor, Kelly Civil Construction assisted in excavation works by ensuring slab footprints, levels, and dimensions met strict design tolerances prior to construction. Concrete blinding layers were first placed to establish level and stable working platforms, providing the foundation for subsequent structural works.
Our team completed all formwork, reinforcement fixing, and concrete placement for the base slabs and associated structural elements. We also assisted with the lifting and positioning of precast culvert units, headwalls, and wing walls to ensure accurate installation and structural integration.
Following installation of the precast components, grouting and waterproofing works were undertaken to seal the structures and provide long-term protection against water ingress and deterioration. Throughout construction, careful coordination between contractors ensured works were completed efficiently while maintaining the integrity of the existing water infrastructure.
The completed crossings now provide reliable access infrastructure with enhanced durability and resilience, supporting ongoing operations while safeguarding the long-term performance of the channel network.
